How Stripe fees work
Stripe prices every payment as a percentage of the amount plus a fixed fee — 2.9% + 30¢ for a standard US card. A Stripe processing fee calculator exists because that little fixed fee makes the effective rate swing with ticket size: on a $10 charge the all-in cost is 5.9%, on a $500 charge it's barely 3%. - How do I calculate Stripe fees?
- Stripe's standard US fee is a percentage of the transaction plus a fixed amount: 2.9% + 30¢ for domestic cards. To calculate Stripe fees on a payment, multiply the amount by 2.9% and add $0.30 — on a $100 charge that's $2.90 + $0.30 = $3.20, leaving a net payout of $96.80. - What are Stripe's fees in the US?
- As published on Stripe's pricing page: 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic card charge, an extra 1.5% for international cards (plus 1% if currency conversion is required), and 0.8% capped at $5.00 for ACH direct debit. Custom pricing exists for large volume, but these are the standard self-serve rates.
- How much should I charge to receive $100 after Stripe fees?
- Use the gross-up mode: to net $100 on a domestic card you'd charge $103.30 — Stripe takes $3.30 and you keep $100.00. The general formula is (target + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029), rounded up to the cent.
- How much do Stripe fees cost on a subscription?
- The fixed 30¢ is charged on every invoice, so billing monthly means paying it 12 times a year. A $29/month subscription costs $13.68 a year in Stripe processing fees; billed as one $348 annual charge it's $10.39. The recurring view in this calculator shows both, and the gap widens at lower price points.
- Does Stripe charge more for international cards?
- Yes — cards issued outside the US add 1.5% on top of the standard rate, and if the charge needs currency conversion Stripe adds another 1%. Select "International card" in the calculator to see the higher split.
- Does Stripe return processing fees when I refund a payment?
- No. When you refund a charge, the customer gets the full amount back but Stripe keeps the original processing fee, so a refunded sale still costs you the fee.
